You Are Here was devised and developed by Metal as a way of exploring with young people the atmosphere, cultural life and future potential of their home towns and cities.
Metal is interested in how artists of all different kinds, contribute to the thinking, the identity and the development of ideas within civil and community life, and in particular within places that are undergoing major change and development.
Working with Insite, and Essex County Council we identified three towns across Essex that are currently undergoing a masterplanning process – Harlow, Harwich and Southend on Sea – all of whom are working towards a future vision for their town.
We asked the pupils of a secondary school in each town to work with us, alongside an artist, an architect, a designer and the masterplanning body, to help us to understand their town, and to draw out the ideas and potential for its future.
‘You Are Here’ is a set of three guides (one for each town) to give you a flavour of what the pupils discovered about the place they live (including best places to hang out, best activities, best people, landmarks, eating places, urban myths, sounds, smells etc), the people they met, and the excitement they felt for its future.

Good afternoon all
I just thought I’d keep you up to date with what’s happening at The Hoy and some other folk-related events in the coming few days and weeks:
Tomorrow Night (Tuesday 20th Jan) is an Open Mike Night at The Hoy featuring Derek ‘Otto’ Oliver. There will be plenty of space for floor singers and I’m the MC.
Next Tuesday (Tuesday 27th Jan) the guests at The Hoy are The Strawbs (Acoustic). There has already been a great deal of interest in the evening and I would recommend getting to The Ship early to get a seat.
This Wednesday (21st Jan) The Havering Folk Club return to their venue at The Golden Lion, 2 High Street, Romford.
This Friday (23rd Jan) Preview’s annual pantomime “Dick’s Willingto (the sequel) Dick fancies A-Broad” at The Spread Eagle, Prittlewell. Admission £1 Doors Open 8.30.
3rd Feb The Hoy guests are Mawkin:Causley – it’s sure to be another packed evening at The Ship.
Saturday 7th Feb – The 10th dance organised by Bullnose Morris, in aid of the Leigh Folk Festival Assoc. Music provided by Rat on a Stick at St Margaret’s Church Hall, Lime Avenue, Leigh on Sea. This is always very popular so get your tickets (£8) in advance by calling 01268 793905. (Bring your own booze and nibbles)
By the way, this year’s Leigh Folk Festival runs from 24th – 28th June 2009 and I gather there is already a formidable list of guest artistes. If anyone wants to get involved with the festival organisation in any way, either in the run-up or during the event, please let me know.
Regards

We’re getting very excited at Metal as work is coming along at Chalkwell Hall, in Chalkwell Park. If you’ve had a chance to walk through the park recently you may have seen, lots of knocking down, digging and clearing out as the renovations get well underway.
In celebration of the building work starting at Chalkwell Hall, Metal commissioned photographer, Benedict Johnson, to work with sixteen local people to create a series of portraits of Southend people reflecting how they feel about the culture in their town.
The portraits can now be seen on the hoardings surrounding the hall, along with information and plans for the renovations.

Thirty pounds may sound like an awful lot of money to blow on one magazine, but for the past few months, hordes of French people have been doing exactly that. Fashionable coffee tables have been straining under the weight of what has been variously described as “the most beautiful magazine in the world” and “a little jewel of chic”. For every self-respecting Parisian knows that the Read more »
