A chance to see two films selected by Dan Kidner (Focal Point Gallery Residency Programme Manager 2009/2010) for the Holocaust Memorial Day.

Images of the World and the Inscription of War (1989) by Harun Farocki and Night and Fog (1955) by Alain Resnais will be shown on the 65th anniversary of Holocaust Memorial Day. The latter film contains images that may upset or cause distress.

Other Holocaust Memorial Day events on Wednesday 27 January:

-Tree Planting Ceremony, Blenheim Park, Leigh-on-Sea Town Centre, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9.
At this simple ceremony to commemorate the lives of those who perished in the Nazi Holocaust and more recent genocides, the Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, Councillor Brian Smith, will plant a tree in Blenheim Park. All are welcome to attend. The site in Blenheim Park may be accessed from Mountdale Gardens, either from the car park beside the Fire Station or from the pedestrian entrance in Mountdale Gardens roughly opposite Treelawn Drive.

-Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration @ Southend Civic Centre Victoria Avenue, Southend, Essex, SS2 6ER
On the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, this event is a time for reflection about what we should be doing today to build a safer and more inclusive society. The commemoration includes music, poetry and an address by a Holocaust survivor, Mr. Lesley Kleinman. This free event is open to all to attend.
