As part of the Holocaust Memorial Day, David Shields is showing his series of photographs from holocaust sites across the Europe at the Southend Library.
David used a ‘through the viewfinder’ technique (taking digital photos of an older camera’s viewfinder image) to document holocaust related sites across the Europe (Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic).
According to Shields: ‘The Holocaust is an atrocity that lies close to our consciousness; it occurred in our parents’ lifetime, in a place just hours away from England. In 2009 I set out on a journey by car across mainland Europe to Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic to document this part of our collective history in a striking yet unconventional way.’
