Braintree District Arts is seeking to engage an artist to run a series of workshops during spring 2012, leading to the production of street and carnival float decorations.

This project, grant aided by Essex County Council, is designed as part of the Essex- wide ‘Sparks Will Fly’ programme for the Cultural Olympiad. Braintree will be hosting a series of events in June 2012, starting with the local Carnival, and culminating in a town centre visit from the ‘Sparks Will Fly’ performance team, accompanied by various celebrations around the town. We are aiming to decorate a Braintree District Arts float for the Carnival, the design of which will be inspired by the Carnival theme of ‘Going for Gold’, and will advertise ‘Sparks Will Fly’ events, and also to provide a series of street decorations with a similar theme for the town centre. These might take the form of banners or bunting, but we are open to other more innovative ideas from artists applying for this commission.

The artist appointed will be required to run an open workshop session for general public participation, several further sessions with a local youth organisation and the Braintree ‘Rethink’ group for people with mental health problems and their carers, and to produce completed decorations resulting from these sessions. The successful candidate will be suitably qualified and experienced, ideally with current CRB check and public liability insurance already in place.

Fee offered for workshops and delivery of street and carnival decoration: £1500. An additional sum is available for materials, evaluation and photographic recording.

Braintree District Arts is a volunteer run registered charity, which aims to promote and encourage the arts for the Braintree District, and acts as an ‘umbrella’ organisation for other local arts groups.
