They are set up to promote the interaction with the collection of the Palace Theatre Club’s archive of old photos, posters and programmes.

Each activity is free and everyone is welcome.

The events will take place as follows:

· Friday 8th June – Westcliff Library 11am – 3pm
· Friday 3rd August – Southend Central Library 11am – 3pm

The events will be fun for all the family and include arts and crafts, word searches and quizzes all
based around the much-loved local theatre. There will also be opportunities to view some of the Palace
Theatre’s vast archive of posters, programmes and photos which have been collected throughout its
100-year history.

Belfairs School is also marking the centenary by leading a schools project that will bring 10 schools
together to create a film about the Palace.

2012 marks the bicentenary celebration of the birth of Charles Dickens. His legacy still makes an impact in film, radio and theatre today. Simon Callow will launch this year’s festival with his talk ‘Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World.’ This wonderful event brings to Southend one of our best loved actors and a tribute to the great Victorian writer.

Simon Callow Friday 2nd March 7.30-9.30pm His career spans a wealth of film, theatre and writing but for most of us he remains one of our favourite actors, appearing in Four Weddings and a Funeral, A Room with a View and many others. His talk ‘Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World’ launches this year’s festival and will be hugely popular so book early to reserve your place. Andrew Miller and Kevin Howarth (narrator) Thursday 8th March 7.30-9.30pm Shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize, Snowdrops documents a life of crime, corruption and moral decline in modern Russia. Andrew’s debut novel was written while he was the Moscow Correspondent for the Economist but he emphasises it is not an autobiographical account. Ruth Dugdall Wednesday 14th March, 7.30-9.30pm Award winning author Ruth Dugdall brings a fantastic novel in ‘The Sacrificial Man.’ A psychological thriller, the book weaves a tale that is both surprising and disturbing. Winning the Debut Dagger Award in 2005 set Ruth on the path to success as a writer but she remains keen to help others in the field and regularly runs workshops to help bring new talent to life. Vicky Kelly/Abbie Norbury and Relaxation/Rejuvenation Workshop with www.blossomdays.co.uk Saturday 24th March 11-1pm We are delighted to bring this local author and life coach for this wonderful workshop designed to help you get what you really want out of life. Steve Feasey

Simon Hoggart – 2nd March, 7.30-9.30pm

Simon brings great wit and experience to launch this year’s festival. He allows our favourite MPs no slack as he writes his parliamentary sketches, and on that note alone it makes him a much admired figure. However, his career features much more, with a wealth of talent in writing, journalism and broadcasting. He is a hilarious speaker and will definitely entertain his audience. £9

You would be forgiven for thinking he comes from a privileged background but here is a man who, by his own efforts, has cut a swathe through the English class system. He is the Lord High Steward of Westminster Abbey, was director of the V&A, is a writer, historian, gardener and a wonderful gentleman. What a delight to have him at this year’s festival. £9

It’s inspired by the pantomime currently at Cliffs – Peter Pan – and aimed at children between 5-8 years. They will learn all about the characters in Peter Pan, create their own Neverland, learn about Pantomime and have a go at a bit of acting themselves.

The Southend Central Library is hosting a children’s book festival, PAINT A STORY. Book now – the tickets are going fast!

Children’s book authors and poets will lead a series of storytelling and craft workshops. Renowned artist Jane Ray launches the festival on the 2nd October, followed by Claire Freedman – the author of the best-selling hilarious series Aliens in Underpants! Jackie Morris will be hosting 2 events for schools and Ellie who is still in school is coming for a day of mouth-watering fun! Performance poet Justin Coe wraps up the festival with 2 acclaimed workshops – The Ringmaster of Rhymes and the Jumble Book (aimed at children with dyslexia).

Note that these events are interactive and could be messy! ‘Three Ages in Art’ include the latest impressionistic oil portraits and landscapes from local painter John Harwood; adventurer son Phil’s travel photography; and granddaughter Jemma who will be presenting analogue photography and digital imagery.

Johns’ figurative oil painting expresses the beauty of the landscape around us, both manmade and natural, where within the composition of elements a narrative or emotion emanates. John has exhibited previously, including prize winning works at the Beecroft Gallery’s Open Exhibition.

Phil’s intrepid journeys yield profound insights into the lives of native fishermen and villagers, from the photographer’s five month canoe trip through the Congo. Traversing two thousand, eight hundred miles of Congo River and averaging eight hours paddling each day, Phil developed a reverent understanding of this most dangerous region and the beauty it holds.
