The Thalian Theatre Group presents Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell by Keith Waterhouse, which tells a story of the gambler, journalist, fervent alcoholic and four-times married Jeffrey Bernard. Catch it at the Railway Hotel on 18-20 March or at the Alexandra Yacht Club on 26 March.
Jeffrey Bernard wrote the ‘Low Life’ column for the Spectator magazine chronicling Soho life, as well as offering a very personal philosophy on vodka, women and race-courses. From this, Keith Waterhouse has brilliantly constructed a play (the title being the euphemism used by the Spectator when Bernard was incapable of writing his column) which is set in the saloon bar of Bernard’s favourite Soho pub, the Coach and Horses.
An extraordinary celebration of life – hailed as one of the funniest evenings you can have in the theatre, and Winner of the Evening Standard Best Comedy award in 1990. See cat racing, the egg and biscuit tin trick and a colourful variety of friends, lovers, wives, irate editors, jockeys, judges, policemen, poets, acid tongued barmaids and kindred spirits. While Jeffrey, in a witty and self deprecating way, divulges everything from his outrageous past; details of his drinking, his love life, his impotence and habitually setting his bed on fire.
